Thursday Movie Picks: Halloween Edition: Werewolves

I don't watch any horror, but I have watched films that have either horror elements in them or are remakes or reboots of classic horror characters like The Mummy and The Wolfman and Frankenstien. Here is my very short list of films that feature werewolves. I was tempted just to have this be the whole post: http://bit.ly/VymZ6M

1.  Underworld
I remember seeing the sequel at the cinema, it was during my school years. I also remember buying the DVDs then selling them years later thinking why the hell did I buy these. Underworld was on TV quite a bit too at the time. It was essentially a vampire film but in the first film, theres a war going between vamps and lycans (fancy name for werewolves). I remember they or someone else engineered silver liquid bullets? Then then werewolves made UV light bullets to kill the vamps. Anyway, after watching the first film, it didn't seem the obvious choice for a franchise but at least Kate Beckinsale got something out of it.

2. Dog Soldiers
I saw this by accident. I thought it was a war film. I recoginsed some of the actors and though, sure I'll watch this alone at night. I was freaked out as soon as I realised what I was watching. I stuck with it though and yes, I regret it. But through the gore and scares, it is actually a decent British horror film. Of course it goes without saying I will never see it again.

3. The Wolfman
This came out when I was at Uni, my friends and I were all excited to see it for one reason or another, (mine was Benicio Del Toro) and then we were all disappointed. It wasn't that great. It had a great cast and was all set to bring back the classic monsters but instead of a classic monster movie, it was just a run of the mill Victorian werewolf film, with not much of twist. I actually can't remember the end.

Don't forget to check out what Wandering Through the Shelves picked, the blog that started Thursday Movie Picks.

  1. Dog Soldiers is an obvious pick! I love how it draws an approach as in the first Predator as well as in Night of the Living Dead.

  2. Another Dog Soldiers! I've never heard of it before today. Underworld is a good one, but I never got around to seeing Wolfman despite loving Benicio del Toro.

  3. I'd never heard of Dog Soldiers but this is the second mention so far so I'll have to seek it out. I've seen pieces of Underworld but it didn't engage me enough to want to sit down and see it from start to finish. One of my friends said The Wolfman was possibly the worst movie she'd ever seen and since I wasn't to keen on it to begin with I've always given it a pass.

  4. Underworld I am seeing everywhere and should finally see this film. Dog Soldiers look scary and the werewolf has a little bikini on-thankfully it is not a red speedo. I have seen the last film and it is ho-hum. You would think with all the big actors it would be better...it's not

  5. You're right about The Wolfman, we all thought it would be better. I think it didnt have any focus and the 'reveal' was expected as there was basically only 3 people in the film. Underworld was good at the time, now looking back its a bit 'meh' but if you've not seen any of them, it might be worth a look.

  6. Dog Soilders was an easy go to for werewolves. But I will never see it again - too scared. Underworld has lost its way over the years, not sure if it worked as a franchise, maybe just an elaborate game film.

  7. I think Dog Soldiers is quite a 'small' film. Great Brit cast though. I would give Wolfman a miss, especially if you love del Toro.

  8. I've actually not seen either the first Predator or Night of the Living Dead - not fan of horror or horror looking aliens. Dog Soldier was my go to :)

  9. Underworld - I love the term lycans. Yes it is so much fancier but also makes sense in the context of the movie where some of the older vamps and lycans have survived for centuries and as such use old terms. I agree Underworld has lost it's way as a franchise. They had started out with such good world building that I've always wanted more from it.

  10. It started well and lost its way. I think when the makers started thinning the heard of characters from the start of the second film, it was going a bit off. Then Twilight came along and pretty much ruined the vampire theme forever.
